In spite of recent talks of unsatisfactory sales, PSVR 2 sales have already outpaced those of the original PSVR over the same corresponding launch phase.
Reports recently emerged that Sony’s second-generation headset the PlayStation VR 2 was off to a slow start and that company would be cutting down its production numbers. A few months ago, Bloomberg reported that the headset sold only 270,000 units globally at launch against a target of 2 million sales and that Sony had, as a result, decided to curtail output after disappointing pre-order launch numbers.
The negative reports appear to have prompted Sony to release its actual sales numbers which show that the headset is indeed doing quite well and that sales have already surpassed those of the original PSVR over the corresponding period.
According to Sony’s figures, the PlayStation VR 2 headset sold close to 600,000 units within the first six weeks after its launch on February 22nd this year. The original PlayStation VR had an impressive performance in its own right, selling 550,000 units during the corresponding launch phase in 2016.
Sony shared data on headset sales at its Business Segment Meeting 2023. While the sales figures aren’t far apart, they show the PSVR 2 headset surpassed the original one by 8% over the same launch phase.
The sales figures have beaten the market research firm IDC’s forecasts of 270,000 units that were cited by the Bloomberg article in March.
